Expressive Arts Student Therapist through WHEAT (Winnipeg Holistic Expressive Arts Therapy Institute)
Magdalena Angel
Expressive Arts Therapist (Student)
No art experience necessary, “engaging in creative pursuits can be a universal human experience, accessible to anyone regardless of skill level or artistic background” Groot et al., 2021
I am a first generation Colombian-Canadian, mother, partner, educator, activist, creative, and Expressive Arts student therapist.
The Expressive Arts is an approach that combines metaphor, story telling, sound, visual arts, movement, drama, presence (and more) to foster deep personal growth and community development. When used therapeutically the expressive arts are a tool for self-discovery, self-care, self-reflection, connecting with our inner-wisdom and for creating our own clarity. It is a resource-based approach, where you can feel supported to explore your inner world.
Through presence, my approach is unique to each client and my practice is moment specific, situation specific and person specific. As the client, you get to decide what questions to be with and how. As the practitioner, I will create a safe container for you to engage with your questions through the Expressive Arts. Together we will identify what works for you, and I will honour what you need. You can expect to come away from our time together feeling witnessed and connected.
I came to Expressive Arts naturally, as in my personal life I have facilitated monthly women’s Circles for the past eight years. The purpose of these circles is to provide a safe space to foster a supportive community among women where we can tune into ourselves and our own intuition. I offer participants an opportunity to hold space for one another, practice self-reflection and engage with the creative process through journaling, meditation, poetry, music and conversation- all elements of an Expressive Arts practice! These monthly circles invite connection, healing and pause into all of our lives. As a host and facilitator, I curate a safe space and I promote increased well-being for myself and the women who attend these circles. I will draw from this experience and bring it into my practice as I support you.
I started my own wellness journey when I attended my first yoga class at 14 years old. Then at 18, I began learning about presence and mindfulness and have continued to practice presence, mindfulness & various forms of meditation ever since. In addition to this practice, I read and write poetry, spend time with nature, dance in my living room and sing while I’m cooking. As a personal interest I also engage regularly with books, articles and podcasts on western psychology and Buddhist psychology.
Thank you for reading my bio and for considering me as your practitioner. Through a kind and compassionate approach, I look forward to supporting and igniting your creativity and path to wellness through the therapeutic use of the arts. No previous art experience necessary.

Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying)
I am excited to begin my counselling journey with Dearborn Therapy after completing my Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology at Yorkville University and becoming a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying). I look forward to supporting clients as they manage anxiety and depression, navigate emotional challenges, understand relational patterns, and address chronic pain and somatic symptoms. Additionally, I work with clients to clarify and pursue personal and professional goals, establish healthy boundaries, cultivate a balanced and sustainable lifestyle, and develop practical strategies to overcome obstacles such as stress, burnout, and self-doubt.
My approach draws from psychodynamic and attachment-based theories, which explore how early experiences shape how we relate to ourselves and others. I help clients examine identity, self-worth, and emotional patterns that may be rooted in the past but continue to affect the present. In my practice, I pay close attention to the connection between emotional and physical pain, supporting a more compassionate and integrated understanding of the self.
I see therapy as a partnership where your experience guides the process. My role is to create a safe, supportive space where together we can identify what’s holding you back and work to shift unhelpful patterns, helping you find greater clarity, balance, and a stronger sense of self.
I integrate a range of approaches including narrative therapy, mindfulness practices, and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to support resilience, self-compassion, and lasting change. Outside of the therapy space, I enjoy spending time outdoors with friends and family, curling up with a good book, and continuing to learn and grow both personally and professionally.

Abdel Habuka
Joining us in September. Psychotherapy Student.
Abdel Habaka is a Master of Counselling Psychology (MACP) candidate at Athabasca University, completing his practicum year here at Dearborn Therapy. He has several years of experience in mental health and addictions programs across the Kenora area, including youth live-in treatment, shelter operations, and culturally responsive program and system design. Abdel is completing his thesis during his practicum and supporting current research with Athabasca University. You can learn more about that work here: https://livingatlasofquality.ca/search-center/regenerative-communitiesliving/
He has also been instructing courses at Seven Generations College in Kenora for the past three years, focusing on integrating Anishinaabe knowledge and practices within a mainstream Western education system.
Abdel takes an integrative approach to therapy. He draws primarily on dialectical-behavioural, mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, and solutions-focused brief therapy but his work considers the full picture: biological, psychological, social, and spiritual. He stays within his competence and makes sure you are not only focused on one area without considering the others. For Abdel, integration means working with the evidence, while also honouring cultural and traditional knowledge. He listens to your full story, considers different levels of context, and together, we co-construct meaning and agree on what the therapy will consist of.
Bilingual in English and Arabic, with Egyptian-Canadian roots, Abdel often works with clients navigating bicultural identity, family expectations, faith, and the systems they deal with daily. He believes therapy works best when it feels like a real conversation, without judgment, and at a pace that fits you. He welcomes clients from all backgrounds and ages, with a particular focus on youth and young adults between 16 and 30.
Outside of work, Abdel enjoys playing sports, engaging in diverse cultural activities, and learning about the world.

Nik Novak (he/him/his)
Masters of Counselling Psychology Student.
Nik will be supervised under Amanda Brennan, RP.
I believe that each of us has a greater capacity for growth than we sometimes realize. Often, the solutions we seek are already within us. My role is to help you uncover your strengths, insights, and inner resources so that you can move toward the life you want to live.
We all experience periods where we feel stuck, overwhelmed, disconnected, or uncertain about our next steps. In those moments, having a space to speak openly and honestly with another person can make a meaningful difference.
My approach is primarily person-centred and draws from mindfulness-based, strengths-based, and cognitive-behavioural approaches when helpful.
I am especially passionate about working with adolescent and adult men. Many men are taught to carry their struggles alone, and as a result can find it difficult to talk openly about stress, relationships, identity, purpose, or emotional well-being. I strive to create an environment where clients can speak candidly, feel understood, and develop practical ways of creating meaningful change in their lives.
Before pursuing a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology degree from Yorkville University, I spent five years supporting adults experiencing addiction, homelessness, and other significant life challenges. My experience includes working in supportive housing in Victoria, British Columbia, as well as at the Detox Centre and Managed Alcohol Program in Kenora, Ontario. These experiences reinforced my belief that meaningful change is most likely to occur when people feel understood rather than judged, and when they are given the opportunity to build on the strengths they already possess.
I believe that lasting change often grows from small actions practiced consistently over time. Together, we may explore habits and routines that support well-being, including physical activity, mindfulness, meaningful relationships, and connection to personal values.
Outside of the therapy room, I work as an Educational Assistant at St. Thomas Aquinas High School and founded the Saints Birding Club. Through the club, I encourage young people to slow down, pay closer attention to the living world, and spend meaningful time outdoors with others. I am passionate about helping young people reconnect with themselves, their communities, and the natural world through practices that cultivate attention, curiosity, and well-being.
I am also a member of the Plum Village tradition founded by Thich Nhat Hanh and help facilitate online mindfulness gatherings. The teachings of mindfulness and compassion continue to influence both my personal life and my work with clients.

Here is what she had to say:
I deeply value the significance of culture, mindfulness, and the healing power of nature in the therapeutic process. I offer services in person and virtually.
I was born and raised in Northwestern Ontario and have been working as a Paramedic in the region since 2017. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside first responders - paramedics, police officers, fire fighters, dispatchers, and emergency staff in the hospitals. I understand the unique mental health challenges that come with balancing work and home life. I am here to support you with empathy and compassion, whether it’s through individual counselling, group work, or critical incident debriefing services.
My experience spans both mental health and substance use. I have worked with Live-In Treatment Centres, individual out-patient counselling, and group sessions with clients looking to make lasting changes to their substance use. I utilize Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) techniques. I plan to further my knowledge and certification in DBT this spring.
I am particularly passionate about offering therapy services involving the outdoors and animals. Much of my own healing comes from spending time off-grid, hunting, fishing, and living off the land as much as I can. I understand a traditional office space isn’t for everyone, especially for those who have grown up in Northwestern Ontario. I will not shy away from meeting you where you are at, whether that’s on a walk, in your home, or engaging in organizations that offer animal therapy.
I also work with individuals who have experienced intimate partner violence, sexual abuse/assault, sex-trafficking, and I can offer sexual health education as part of our practice. You are not alone and I offer space of empathy, understanding and validation as you navigate your journey.
Above all, confidentiality and privacy are my highest priorities. I know how challenging it can be to access services in a small community, and I am here for you. If for any reason we are not a good fit, I will do my best to connect you with the amazing team at Dearborn Therapy to ensure you receive the care you deserve.
