EMDR is a structured therapy that encourages the patient to focus briefly on the trauma memory while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation (typically eye movements), which is associated with a reduction in the vividness and emotion associated with the trauma memories. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an extensively researched, effective psychotherapy method proven to help people recover from trauma and PTSD symptoms. Ongoing research supports positive clinical outcomes, showing EMDR therapy as a helpful treatment for disorders such as anxiety, depression, OCD, chronic pain, addictions, and other distressing life experiences (Maxfield, 2019). EMDR therapy has even been superior to Prozac in trauma treatment (Van der Kolk et al., 2007). Shapiro and Forrest (2016) share that EMDR therapists in 130 countries have successfully treated millions.

Couple and family therapy, a specialized form of psychotherapy, addresses the behaviours of individuals and how they impact relationships within families and couples, aiming to improve communication, resolve conflicts, and enhance overall functioning.

Entering a supportive environment, couples and families can come together and engage in type of psychotherapy that focuses on the behaviours of all family members and how those behaviours affect individuals, relationships within the family, and the family unit as a whole.

It involves working with couples or the entire family, rather than focusing solely on one individual.

Goal:
To improve relationships, resolve conflicts, and enhance the overall functioning of individuals, couples, and families.

Therapists will draw from a variety of techniques such as structural, strategic, systemic, narrative, and transgenerational therapies.

Child and youth therapy, or child counseling, provides a safe space for children and teens to address emotional, social, and behavioral challenges, offering tools and support to improve their well-being and coping skills.

Child and youth therapy, also known as child counseling, aims to support children and youth in navigating emotional, social, and behavioral difficulties.

The goal isn't to "fix" the child, but rather to equip them with the skills and strategies to manage challenges, improve their well-being, and build healthy relationships.

Therapists use various approaches, including play therapy, expressive arts, and talk therapy, to connect with children and help them express their feelings and experiences.

Therapy can help children and youth cope with a wide range of issues, such as:
Emotional: Anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, and difficulty regulating emotions.
Social: Bullying, social isolation, difficulty making friends, and relationship problems.
Behavioural: Disruptive behaviours, attention problems, and difficulty following rules.
Family: Family conflict, divorce, and substance abuse in the family.

Therapists create a safe and supportive environment where children can explore their thoughts and feelings, develop coping skills, and build self-esteem.

Therapy often involves parents or caregivers, providing them with tools and strategies to support their child's emotional and behavioral well-being.

Play Therapy:
For younger children, play therapy uses toys and games to help them express their feelings and work through difficult experiences.

Talk Therapy:
As children get older, talk therapy becomes more prominent, allowing them to express their thoughts and feelings verbally.

Skill-Building:
Therapy can help children learn new skills, such as problem-solving, communication, and emotional regulation.

EMDR can also be a great resource to teach children how to process and regulate emotions.

Elizabeth Carter, Registering Social Worker/Psychotherapist

As a newly registering Social Worker/Psychotherapist, I practice from a person-centred, trauma-informed perspective. I deeply value the significance of culture, mindfulness, and the healing power of nature in the therapeutic process. I offer services in person and virtually.

I was born and raised in Northwestern Ontario and have been working as a Paramedic in the region since 2017. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside first responders - paramedics, police officers, fire fighters, dispatchers, and emergency staff in the hospitals. I understand the unique mental health challenges that come with balancing work and home life. I am here to support you with empathy and compassion, whether it’s through individual counselling, group work, or critical incident debriefing services.

My experience spans both mental health and substance use. I have worked with Live-In Treatment Centres, individual out-patient counselling, and group sessions with clients looking to make lasting changes to their substance use. I utilize Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) techniques. I plan to further my knowledge and certification in DBT this spring.

I am particularly passionate about offering therapy services involving the outdoors and animals. Much of my own healing comes from spending time off-grid, hunting, fishing, and living off the land as much as I can. I understand a traditional office space isn’t for everyone, especially for those who have grown up in Northwestern Ontario. I will not shy away from meeting you where you are at, whether that’s on a walk, in your home, or engaging in organizations that offer animal therapy.

I also work with individuals who have experienced intimate partner violence, sexual abuse/assault, sex-trafficking, and I can offer sexual health education as part of our practice. You are not alone and I offer space of empathy, understanding and validation as you navigate your journey.

Above all, confidentiality and privacy are my highest priorities. I know how challenging it can be to access services in a small community, and I am here for you. If for any reason we are not a good fit, I will do my best to connect you with the amazing team at Dearborn Therapy to ensure you receive the care you deserve.

I am excited to begin my counselling journey with Dearborn Therapy after completing my Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology at Yorkville University and becoming a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying). I look forward to working with children, teens, and adults to support them in managing anxiety, navigating emotional challenges, understanding relational patterns, and addressing chronic pain and somatic symptoms. With over 15 years of experience as an educator, I bring a strong foundation in human development and a commitment to meeting each client where they are.

My approach draws from psychodynamic and attachment-based theories, which emphasize how early relationships and life experiences shape how we relate to others, understand ourselves, and respond to stress. I work with clients to explore identity, self-worth, and the emotional patterns that may be rooted in the past but continue to show up in the present. I also pay close attention to the connection between emotional and physical pain, helping clients develop a more compassionate and holistic understanding of their inner world.

I view therapy as a collaborative process where you remain the expert of your experience. My role is to walk alongside you with openness and curiosity, creating a non-judgmental space for insight, healing, and long-term growth. Together, we will uncover the root causes of distress, recognize and shift patterns, and build meaningful tools for change.

I integrate a variety of approaches into my work, including narrative therapy, mindfulness practices, and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), to support clients in challenging unhelpful beliefs, rewriting personal narratives, and fostering resilience.

Outside of the therapy space, I enjoy spending time outdoors with friends and family, curling up with a good book, and continuously learning to stay engaged in both personal and professional growth.
